Oaklandon Civic Theatre: Historic Indianapolis Performing Arts

With a “notable” distinction by the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Architecture, the Oaklandon Civic Theatre is a valuable piece of Indianapolis history. It is one of the oldest Indianapolis theaters, with origins tracing back to 1850. The site of the Oaklandon Civic Theatre has contained various structures and has been rebuilt twice from fire. Eventually, it became a stage for Oaklandon High School and surrounding schools to perform plays and host graduations, and it was a facility resource for other community events.

As schools began to develop their own facilities for such events, the stage was lost to storage for nearly three decades. In 2004, the Oaklandon Civic Theatre opened as a subsidiary of the Oaklandon Unitarian Universalist Church at the request of a local actress. The debut stage production was John Nassivera’s Making a Killing. Since then, the Theatre has been very successful. Two of its plays have been featured in Indiana University – Purdue University (IUPUI‘s) annual Spirit and Place Festival, a student-run festival that connects organizations, ideas, and people through debates, exhibits, and lectures. Now, the Oaklandon Civic Theatre serves as an outlet for local playwrights to display their work and provides the community with access to Indianapolis performing arts through entertaining and enlightening stage productions.

The Oaklandon Civic Theatre hosts a variety of productions each year from both local and nationally known playwrights. This historic theatre provides not just playwrights, but also aspiring actors of Indianapolis a venue to perform. It has always been a community focused center, providing performing arts entertainment to local residents at an affordable price. The Theatre is a great pillar of Indianapolis art.
