When you think of Indianapolis culture, there must be so many things that come to mind. You might conjure thoughts of Massachusetts Avenue, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the 500 Festival, and maybe The Vogue or The Jazz Kitchen. Yes, Indianapolis has all these contributions to the arts, but you can also experience the thrill of New York theatre as well with Broadway Across America.

Broadway Across America brings touring Broadway productions to two local venues: Clowes Memorial Hall and the Murat Centre. Clowes Memorial Hall is an Indianapolis performing arts center located on the campus of Butler University, near Marian College and the Indiana State Fairgrounds. In addition to Broadway Across America productions like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Movin’ Out, Clowes Memorial Hall has featured the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, making it a great place to see Broadway shows off-Broadway!

The Murat Centre is one of the oldest theaters in Indianapolis, and is actually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located on North New Jersey Street, near Veteran’s Memorial Plaza and Massachusetts Avenue, it is a fixture of Indianapolis nightlife. Broadway Across America productions are held in the historic Murat Egyptian Room as well as the Murat Theatre, both of which can hold over 2,000 avid fans.

Broadway Across America provides some great entertainment, but did you know that it is also a source of Indianapolis education? Yes, Broadway Across America offers many forms of theater training to Indianapolis kids and adults alike. The organization strongly believes that the future of the theater rests in guiding new talent, and to that end they provide a number of valuable learning tools.

Fans can pore over show studies, which are official study guides used by actors and directors to better understand their part to play in any given production. These studies provide plot and character studies in addition to teaching the historical and cultural context, significance, and relevance of a work. It’s a great tool, allowing you to familiarize yourself with a performance before attending. After you’ve seen the show, you can gain a deeper understanding of the work through a careful read of the guide.

The Broadway Across America website also offers a feature called Broadway 101. This Broadway logistics guide gives insights about how Broadway is run, including information on producers, programming, understudies, and workshops. This is a great tool to use to expose all the hard-working cogs that allow Broadway to function, grow, and thrive.

So whether you are an avid theater fan, a growing actor, or just someone who enjoys a good show, be sure to catch a Broadway Across America production at either one of the two venerable Indianapolis theaters, The Clowes Memorial Hall or the Murat Centre. Broadway Across America Indianapolis is your source for great entertainment and valuable show business knowledge. Thanks to BAA, you can now write “Attend a Broadway Performance” as one of many things to do in Indianapolis.
