Indianapolis Opera Chorus

The Indianapolis Opera Chorus is a group of non-professionals that perform as part of the Indianapolis Opera, the only professional opera in Indiana. The Indianapolis Opera Chorus holds open auditions each year to round out the musical talent on stage at Clowes Memorial Hall, the opera’s regular performance venue.

Keep your eyes on NUVO Newsweekly magazine for audition advertisements. If you have a big booming voice, a passion for opera, or the desire to perform, take your shot at being on stage some of the most renowned voices in the nation.

The Indianapolis Opera Chorus often finds itself collaborating on Indianapolis education. Because it performs in the backyard of Butler University, the Indianapolis Opera has extended audition invitations to many up and coming Indianapolis kids looking for a big break in their singing career.

The Indianapolis opera also offers non-singing roles. Members of the Indianapolis community with virtually no artistic background can have the opportunity to know what its like standing center stage in the spotlight. Just one of the many ways the Indianapolis Opera is working to make opera accessible in the Hoosier state.

They also partner with Butler for a program called, Music! Words! Opera! In this program they invite students into their process as they mount one of their regular season shows. They are currently in the thriteenth year of this national curriculum. Teachers can attend workshops in the summer, are provided with study guides during the school year, and given priority seating when they bring their classes from Indianapolis schools.

This program is helping to illuminate opera for a whole new generation of people. Many children’s perception of opera have changed dramatically from thinking of it as a stodgy old art form to a new and exciting dramatic process. Find out how you can get involved by visiting the Indianapolis Opera’s website.

If you are interested in auditioning for the Indianapolis Opera Chorus or the non singing walk on roles, contact Artistic Administrator Stephen Goldberg at or visit their website here. Auditions usually happen in May or June, so keep your eyes peeled or send your resume!
