West District YMCA: Serving the West Side of Indianapolis

The West District YMCA, located on Morris Street, just north of the Indianapolis International Airport, serves the west side of Indianapolis. This branch is the administrative head of the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, and is one of the eleven branches that make up the Indianapolis YMCA. The other branches are: YMCA at the Athenaeum, Baxter YMCA, Benjamin Harrison YMCA, Butler Intercollegiate YMCA, Fishers YMCA, Flat Rock River YMCA Camp, Jordan YMCA, Pike YMCA, Ransburg YMCA, and Urban Mission YMCA.

The West District YMCA sponsors a number of fun and beneficial community activities. The branch runs a summer T-Ball league for ages 3-7 that takes place at Avon Christian Church and the Little League Fields at Ben Davis High School. This activity promotes teamwork and social skills for Indianapolis kids. In addition, the West District YMCA hosts four summer day camps for kids ages 3-15. These day camps are fun, educational, and most of all, affordable.

The West District YMCA doesn’t currently have its own facility, but a state of the art combined YMCA and hospital, dubbed the Hendricks Regional Health YMCA, is slated to be opened in 2010. The organization is still collecting donations for the project, but they have over 60% of the needed funds and expect to break ground in the summer of 2009. Hendricks Regional Health YMCA will feature all the amenities of a traditional YMCA, including an aquatics center, free child care, a climbing wall, athletic fields, and a dance studio. In addition, the wellness center will also feature a full-scale hospital with cardiac rehabilitation services, physical and occupation therapies, sports medicine, and x-ray services. It’s sure to improve life in the community as well as promoting Indianapolis health.
