Anderson Symphony Orchestra: Since 1967

The Anderson Symphony Orchestra is one of Indianapolis‘ many professional orchestras that perform for and enrich Indianapolis society. The Anderson Symphony Orchestra, comparable to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra or the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, was founded in 1967 by leaders in the Anderson University community. The community at the university felt it was important, not only to its students but also to the city of Anderson, that they enrich the cultural scene of the town by making classical music a local attraction. Thus the Anderson Symphony Orchestra was born.

Since then, the symphony orchestra in Anderson has become recognized as one of Indianapolis’ nonprofit organizations. It receives support from various sources, including the Indiana Arts Commission, Anderson University, Hoosier Park, Old National Bank, Arts Place, St. Vincent’s Hospital, and the Legacy Fund.

Without the very generous support of these Indianapolis businesses and organizations, and without the patronage of the people of Indianapolis and other cities in Indiana, the Anderson Symphony Orchestra would not be what it is today: a first rate musical society making valuable contributions to Indianapolis music, Indianapolis performing arts, and Indianapolis arts in general.

The illustrious musicians that make up the symphony orchestra in Anderson have been led by Maestro Richard Sowers since 1989. For twenty years, Maestro Sowers has diligently and deftly conducted the symphony, leading them through twenty successful seasons and hundreds of pieces of music.

The Anderson Symphony Orchestra performs at the beautiful Paramount Theater in downtown Anderson. One of the few “atmospheric” theaters left in the country, the Paramount was built in 1929 and retains much of its original structure and design. When the string section fills the Paramount’s auditorium with the soft sounds of their delicate instruments, the theater truly comes to life.
