Andrew Young: Meaningful Indianapolis R&B

Andrew Young is a multi-talented credit to Indianapolis art and the Indianapolis music scene. His satin coated voice has graced advertisements for a myriad of companies, including Tropicana Hotels, Cellular One, and L.S. Ayres. He’s been an advertising salesman for Indianapolis media outlets and the national music media, including MTV, BET, and VH1. But it’s Andrew Young’s dedication to exposing his heart through his music, not his corporate career, that has earned him national recognition and influence in Indianapolis.

Educated at Butler University, a college in Indianapolis, Andrew Young is a true child of the Circle City. He grew up in Carmel, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis, and it was also in Indy that he launched his music career. His shows are often featured in NUVO Newsweekly, and he has played at many Indianapolis bars and music venues, including Landshark’s, DC’s Pub, and P.J. O’Keefe’s. Currently, Andrew Young has several performances lined up at various places around Indianapolis, including private parties, a celebration of the Brickyard 400, Joe’s Grill, Heavy’s, and the Rathskeller Restaurant.

Andrew Young‘s music comes straight from his own personal experience. Unlike many other hip hop and R&B artists, Andrew Young is not concerned with riches, rims, and women. On his three studio albums, 2001’s A Picture of My Life, 2004’s The Single Life, and his newest, Lifetime, Young weaves his own history of loss, betrayal, love, and tears through his powerful voice and gifted songwriting. It’s the lyrics, not the melodies (though those are effective as well), that matter most in Young’s songs, and any listener who has ever been heartbroken or experienced trials will at once feel supported and inspired by Andrew Young’s records.

Like fellow Indianapolis pop musicians Sally Anthony and Totally Michael, Andrew Young has full creative control of most of his music. His albums are made up mostly of original songs for which Young has written both lyrics and music. The occasional cover makes its way into his work, but at no time has he employed a writer for his own songs. Not only is Andrew Young an excellent songwriter, but he also has own television show on the WB, “Andrew Young Live”.
