Indy Irish Fest 2009

Summer in Indianapolis is wending its slow way home, but there’s still one of the biggest Indianapolis fairs and festivals left to enjoy in the beautiful outdoors: The Indy Irish Fest. Beginning Friday, September 18 and running through September 20, this popular Indianapolis event is a happening of the first order presented in Military Park in Indianapolis downtown, by the Fifth Third Bank.

The long weekend party gets just about everybody into the act. Lots of Indianapolis restaurants and Indianapolis bars participate, and many local Indianapolis bands including one of  Indy’s own celtic rock bands, Mother Grove, find a friendly forum at the Indy Irish Fest, which maintains four stages just for music.

The Indy Irish Fest is one of the many opportunities that have sprung up seemingly of their own volition to celebrate the diverse and interesting Indianapolis culture. Festival organizers are still calling for volunteers. If you would like to consider helping out, visit the volunteer webpage for Indy Irish Fest.

But along with eating, drinking and dancing to a variety of Indianapolis music, the festival has plenty more to recommended it. Activities such as the Indy Irish Fest Toast Contest, a sheep herding exhibition, Irish breed dog shows, the renowned 5K Run and Walk with a full Irish breakfast, the Rugby Jamboree, a fascinating cultural area, family clan tents and a real Sunday Celtic Mass are just a few items on the Irish Fest schedule.

Whatever you do, if you’re in the Circle City for the Festival Finale, don’t miss it. Wrapping all the fun into one last festival night, all the bands get together and jam with the folks in the heart of the city, leaving you with memories that will warm you through the winter.
