Sprucing up the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument

Work started on Monday, September 21, 2009 to renovate the most renowned Indianapolis monument in the heart of the Circle City: The Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Expected to take a full month, the sprucing up project required the building of a fence around the interior section of Monument Circle.

The renovation project has an estimated cost of nearly a half a million dollars. It will repair damage caused by rain that found its way through the observation deck, which dates back to the 1930s. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, in downtown Indianapolis, is perhaps the most memorable of many Indianapolis attractions, reaching a height of 284 feet. The corroded supports of the statue that graces its pinnacle, “Miss Indiana,” will be polished up as well.

The renovation to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument is scheduled to be completed in time for the family favorite Christmas festival, the Circle of Lights, with plenty of time to spare. During this special event, which spans the weeks after Thanksgiving into the beginning of the coming year, Indianapolis’ Soldiers and Sailors Monument is strung from tip to toe with some 5,000 brightly colored lights, forming what might be the world’s largest Christmas tree.

Each year, the venerable Indianapolis monument is on the list of “Things to Do in Indianapolis” for over 200,000 visitors. This year, it will be closed until the project is finished on October 23, in time for its annual adornment and appreciation by the entire Indianapolis community and many other cities in Indiana and beyond.

Interesting factoids: Indiana had more troops per capita in that war than all the other states in the nation but one. Indy‘s Soldiers and Sailors Monument is the largest memorial to the Spanish American War and the Civil War in the United States. Did you know that over 25,000 native Hoosiers died in the Civil War?
