Jim Caldwell: Leading the Colts into the Future

On January 12, 2009 Jim Caldwell became the ninth man to be named head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Caldwell has been part of the Indianapolis sports football franchise’s coaching staff  since 2002 when he came to Indy from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While it had been known since January of 2008 that Caldwell would be next in line to coach the Colts, he was in no hurry for the moment to come.

Jim Caldwell was so patient for the title change out of respect for his predecessor and long-time friend Tony Dungy. In fact, Dungy is the reason Caldwell came to Indianapolis in the first place. Jim was part of Dungy’s coaching staff down in Tampa Bay where he was the quarterbacks coach for one season.Jim Caldwell was born January 15, 1955 in Beloit, Wisconsin were he grew up playing football. Jim turned his football prowess into a football scholarship to the University of Iowa, where he was a four year starter at defensive back from 1973-1976. Caldwell stayed on one more year in 1977 as a graduation assistant.

Jim Caldwell walked into one of the best jobs possibly in NFL history when he came to the Circle City in 2002. For his first three years here in Indiana, Caldwell was the Indianapolis Colts quarterbacks coach working daily with one of the greatest QBs the game has ever seen, Peyton Manning. Due to his offense expertise and helping establish the Colts offense as one of the best in the league year in and year out, Jim was named assistant head coach by Dungy prior to the 2005 season.

Jim Cladwell and his wife Cheryl have four children together: Jimmy, Jermaine, Jared and Natalie.

While the Indianapolis Colts head coaching position is the first head coaching job Jim Caldwell has held in the NFL, the man has known nothing but coaching football since he left the playing field his senior year in Iowa.
