2009 Bands of America Grand Nationals

On Saturday, November 14, 2009, the glitzy new Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis will have its roof-beams raised high by the rousing thunder of music at the Bands of America Grand National Championships from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. Recognized as the top event across the United States for marching band competitions, the Bands of America Grand Nationals offers a magnificent forum to put on display the country’s twelve most progressive bands, along with an exposition with over 100 booths, workshops, clinics and other activities.

On Thursday and Friday, November 12 and 13, 2009, some 90 bands will enter the preliminary field competition. On Saturday the 14th, 36 of these will progress to the Semi-Finals, held during the daytime. The Finals, on Saturday evening, pit one dozen of the best of the best bands of America in an all-out, heart-thumping competition for the Grand National Championship. All of the competing groups are high school bands, but Saturday’s Indianapolis event will also showcase exhibitions given by some of the finest college bands in America.

Here’s a great video on the 2008 Bands of America Grand Nationals at downtown Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium.

The organization behind the Bands of America Championships is called Music for All. They are one of the nation’s most important music education groups in terms of creating music advocacy programs such as Bands of America and Orchestra America, as well as sweeping public initiatives and research in the field of music and arts education. A non-profit organization since 1976, Music for All is also the force behind their National Festival, which takes place in Indianapolis every Spring, along with many other programs that support the growth and improvement of music and art education across the country.
