“Enter Love” Proves Entertaining and Enjoyable

This past weekend the Cabaret at the Connoisseur Room in downtown Indianapolis hosted “Enter Love”, original music and lyrics from Indy local  Lynn L. Lupold. Presenting the originals works were five local Indiana singers, Deb Mullins, Kathleen Carter, Shannon Forsell, Ron Hellems and Ron Morgan– accompanied by musical director David Duncan.

This was “Enter Love’s” premiere showing and was received well by those in attendance. Numbers such as “Babbling Voices” and ” What’s Your Name?” got the evening off to a great start ,as well as showing the vocal prowess of the performers. However, among “Enter Love’s”  hits were a few misses that did not need to be included.

The number “All I Ever Wanted” left me wanting more, and while I wanted so badly to love “Double Wide” on premise and title alone, it just wasn’t strong enough. That being said, the good far outweighed the bad, and when Lupold got it right, her music and lyrics were spot on.

The real stars of the show were the Cabaret’s guides for this vocal voyage. Whether as an ensemble, trios, duets or flying solo, these singers took to the stage like a seasoned veterans and worked each and every note to the best of its ability.

Deb Mullins, a familiar name in the Indianapolis music scene, belted several solos that left the audience amazed at the strength of her voice. When she performed “It Was You” in the first act, I did not want it to end…ever. And while Mullins power had the crowd howling for more, Shannon Forsell’s vocal control left listeners inspired. Shannon, who is also the managing director of the Cabaret at the Connoisseur Room, was on top her game all night and those watching were the lucky recipients.

Ron Hellems has a voice so soft and sweet it was a shame he ever had to leave the stage. When Hellems and Forsell teamed up for “Goodbye/Without A Sound,” the emotion was so real, I felt as if I was spying on an intimate moment between the two. Kathleen Carter and Ron Morgan rounded out the cast. These two showed they were no stranger to the stage but lacked the commitment and capabilities of the other three singers.

‘Enter Love” is just the latest on an ever-growing list of winning shows the Cabaret at the Connoisseur Room has presented to the Circle City. The Cabaret offers all of Indianapolis a chance to connect with the artist on stage, an experience that is wholly unique to the Cabaret’s personal setting.
