Review: A Beef and Boards Christmas 2009

A Beef and Boards Christmas 2009 is the perfect holiday event to keep the whole family entertained. This holiday revue offers something different to Indianapolis theatre this season, with a holiday cabaret act that hits all your favorite Christmas songs of the season.  With dinner and dessert to boot, A Beef and Boards Christmas 2009 is a fun and special experience for Indianapolis kids and adults alike.

Now its seventeenth year, A Beef and Boards Christmas 2009 has become part of a lot of Hoosiers’ holiday tradition. Sitting down to a meal with your family and taking in a show all in one place makes the holidays a little less stressful. Enjoy the ones you love while you love A Beef and Boards Christmas 2009. The show is divided into six sections of holiday magic: Winter Wonderland, A City Christmas, A Swingin’ Christmas, Christmas is for Kids, Home for the Holidays and The True Meaning of Christmas. Each part is jam packed with Christmas carols, dances and merriment.

Though the show emulates a big Broadway style, Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre at times falls short of Broadway magic. However, they more than make the difference up with holiday magic. And a few stand out performances really make A Beef and Boards Christmas 2009 fly like Santa’s reindeer. Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre regular Deb Wims dons a deliciously festive fir green dress as she belts out Man With the Bag. Having never heard this song myself, it was clear to me that Wims made it her own. As a true entertainer, Wims interacts with the audience making the room her own personal cabaret. Even sitting all the way in the back, it is easy to share an intimate moment with Wims when she is on.

Amanda Lawson returns to the Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre stage after playing the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. She proves her voice is on top of Indianapolis music once again with the old classic, The Christmas Song. As my favorite holiday song, it is almost impossible to forget Nat King Cole’s famous recording. Yet Lawson succeeds in coloring the song with her own voice and amazing her audience with her powerful sound. But the most impressive voice of the evening belongs to Chris Dickerson, who sings Oh Holy Night (pictured above). This booming bass has a rich deep vibrato. He builds his sound as the song progresses and has the audience eating out of the palm of his hand as he belts out the last few notes. He certainly leaves the strongest impression and wins the prize for most outstanding solo in A Beef and Boards Christmas 2009.

There truly is something for everyone in A Beef and Boards Christmas 2009, especially the kids. Santa returns this year to celebrate Christmas with the cast of this Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre holiday spectacular. The jolly old fellow teams up quite frequently with the young standout, Anna Lasbury, who has a solo of her own: I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. Lasbury is one of the most captivating young talents on stage, with great comedic timing and an engaging spirit.

A Beef and Boards Christmas 2009 is filled to the brim with surprises. From a special appearance by Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer to a dance troupe that rivals the Radio City Rockettes, this holiday special has it all. With thrilling costumes by Brian Horton and fun scenic and lighting designs by Ryan Koharchik, this Indianapolis arts organization puts on a family friendly show with all the trimmings.

Speaking of trimmings, the buffet by Chef Odell Ward is decked out with a holiday meal that rivals the best of Indianapolis restaurants. It includes hand carved roast beef, hand carved roast turkey, stuffing, gravy, broccoli and cheese, seasoned green beans, rotini with marinara, chef’s choice potatoes, baked cod and a fully loaded salad bar. Dinner and the show are included in the price of your ticket. For more information on show times and tickets, visit Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre’s website.
