Classical Christmas Celebrates St. Nick

Christmas in Indianapolis downtown is made complete by the awesome architecture of the Scottish Rite Cathedral. The towering spires and Gothic arches lit up with colorful lights is an integral part of the Indianapolis downtown landscape. Enjoy the beauty of this building as you listen to a combination of Indianapolis music’s finest Indianapolis performing arts groups. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra teams up with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and the Apollo’s Voice Chamber Chorus for Classical Christmas at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.

Conductor Laureate Raymond Leppard will lead the evening as these groups perform Franz Joseph Haydn’s St. Nicholas Mass and Benjamin Britten’s St. Nicholas. They welcome tenors Barry Banks and Richard Croft as soloists in this special Indianapolis event. Classical Christmas by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has become an important holiday tradition in Indianapolis. This year they have chosen two piece, written centuries apart, that celebrate the man in red a.k.a. Saint Nicolas a.k.a. Santa Claus a.k.a. Kris Kringle. Celebrate the season in a unique way with a very special Classical Christmas.

Benjamin Britten’s Cantata, St. Nicholas was written in 1948. In this movement, legendary incidents in the life of the Saint Nicolas, patron saint of children, seamen and travelers, are presented. The part of Saint Nicolas will be sung by a solo tenor. The Indianapolis Children’s Choir will fill story with various contrasting characters. In addition, the choir acts as an eye witness of the miracles and wonders of Saint Nicolas’ life. They tie the story together with prayers and praise.

Franz Joseph Hayden finished his mass honoring Saint Nicholas in 1772. As one of the few pieces he completed before he was fifty, the Saint Nicholas Mass is a relic of his time. Most likely composed to celebrate the feast of St. Nicholas rather than the man himself, the beauty of this music has withstood the test of time.
