The inspiring and unforgettable drama of one woman who triumphs in the face of adversity has captured the hearts and minds of millions. See the sheer love that Celie, a poor uneducated black woman, finds to discover he unique voice in the world. With a moving book and score that features jazz, blues, ragtime and gospel, The Color Purple has been hailed as “a bright odyseey of survival and triumph” by The New York Times. USA Today lauded, “The Color Purple celebrate the inspiring relationships of faith and love. A Broadway hit!”

Set in 1930s Georgia and told through diary entries, The Color Purple is the story of Celie, a fourteen year old girl impregnated by a man she calls Pa. After he children disappear, Celie is forced into marriage by her father. One tragic thing after another happens to Celie, all the while she maintains an attitude of strength and self reliance. Once she discovers the truth about her children’s disapperance she confronts her horrible husband and gains her independence. She starts her own sewing business and reconnects with her long lost children now grown with families of their own.

The story of The Color Purple is one of hope. It is a true testament to the healing power of love. This celebration of life is not to be missed. Initially, their were many skeptics when it was announced that The Color Purple would be turned into a Broadway show. Could musical theatre treat such a delicate and beautiful story arch with the respect and dignity it deserves? Alice Walker’s book was already ingrained into the mind of more than five million people. But would it translate? Plus with unforgettable performances in the film from some of the United States biggest stars including Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey how could stage actors ever measure up?

But producer Scott Sanders believed that music could truly make this story come alive. And boy was he right! Directed by Gary Griffin, adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Marsh Norman, with music and lyris by Grammy Award winners Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray and choreography by Donald Byrd, The Color Purple is a must see Indianapolis event!
