Revealing Garments: A Brief History of Women’s Underwear

The Indianapolis Museum of Art offers wonderful programing all year long for the Indianapolis community. On Thursday, January 21, 2010, the IMA opens up about underwear with their lecture “Revealing Garments: A Brief History of Women’s Underwear.” Tickets for this Indianapolis event are only $5.00 for Indianapolis people and only $3.00 for IMA museum members. The lecture will be held in the Tobias Theatre at 7:00 pm.

The IMA welcomes H. Kristina Haughland, curator of Costume and Textiles at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, to lead the lecture and discussion. Underwear is place center stage as she dissects the history of feminine undergarments. Each era of fashion history has a different take on underwear from corsets and drawers to bustles and brassieres to stocking and shoulder pad. Each shift of fashion necessity when it comes to the unseen underwear reflects changing ideals of women’s figures and of their roles in society.

Simply exploring ladies undergarments can open a window on changing ideas of beauty, hygiend, modesty and respectability (to name a few). Understanding these shifts can be enlightening to comprehending how women arrived at their fashion ideals and societal roles today. Haugland will share works of art, advertisements, cartoons, literary sources and original surviving garments as she delves into drawers and more. This extremely visual lecture will allow attendees to wrap their brains around past and present attitudes and aesthetics.

This lecture pairs perfectly with the IMA’s current exhibit Fashion in Bloom on Gallery Level 2. Open only until the end of this month, Fashion in Bloom examines women’s fashion through the lens of flowers, which inspire many designers. Catch this Indianapolis art exhibit while you still can!
