Romeo and Juliet Opens at the IRT January 19, 2010

The Indiana Repertory Theatre presents one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, Romeo and Juliet, January 19 through February 27, 2010 in Indianapolis downtown. This Indianapolis theatre has produced the Bard’s famed tragedy four times in the past 25 years. Its popularity with Indianapolis people is unparalleled. Tickets for this Indianapolis art event range from $29.00 to $49.00 for adults and $19.00 for Indianapolis kids/ students. All tickets prices are based on show times and dates.

The beauty of Shakespeare’s work is in its adaptability. His poetry remains timeless because of his unique ability to address human issues which transcend generation. The IRT is updating the Bard’s classic to reflect one of the most divisive issues the United States faces: race. Casting the Capulet family as African American and the Montague family as Caucasian, the IRT hopes to explore this hot button topic. Watch as literature’s most famous couple work to overcome issues of hatred and bigotry through the power of their love.

Can the hope their love creates triumph in a world where hate is commonplace? Though we all know the ending of Romeo and Juliet, the glimmers of hope presented through their young yet color blind love can makes us aware of our own perceptions of the world. In their version of Shakespeare’s beloved romantic tragedy, the IRT explores love, hate, race and humanity in an effort to challenge Indianapolis people to be better.

Though the subject and content are race in this updated classic, the topic is hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
