Double Shot Music Documentary Day

As if offering galleries upon galleries of art work for Indianapolis people to see for absolutely FREE wasn’t enough, the Indianapolis Museum of Art programs a whole host of special Indianapolis events. Saturday March 13, 2010, the IMA hosts Double Shot Music Documentary Day, featuring two full length documentaries about musicians driven to create and perform.

Shown as part of Disabilities Awareness Month, Double Shot Music Documentary Day at the IMA is produced with promotional support from Indiana School for the Blind and ArtsWORK Indiana. The two films are Genghis Blues and Heavy Load. Each offers a different perspective on the music world through the eyes (or ears rather) of people that have disabilities of one kind or another.

Genghis Blues is the incredible story of a blind San Francisco blues singer with the unique talent as a master of Tuvan throat singing. This Academy Award nominated documentary has one of the most interesting and uplifting soundtracks in films. Paul Pena became fascinated with the Tuvan art form after first hearing it on a Russian radio broadcast. When he met the Mongolian masters on their United States tour, they were so impressed with his ability that they invited him to Tuva’s annual singing competition.

The second selection in the IMA’s Double Shot Music Documentary Day is Heavy Load. The film follows the punk band Heavy Load, which is comprised of musicians with and without learning disabilities. The band struggles to survive as they balance days filled with work placement and social workers and nights in the studio and at gigs. The unlikely band overcomes obstacles to prove that punk culture, social activism and learning disabilities all require an incredible amount of truthfulness.

Tickets to this Indianapolis art event are $7.00 for Indianapolis people, $5.00 for Indianapolis kids with a student ID and $5.00 for members of this Indianapolis art museum. Don’t miss this informative and entertaining Indianapolis event.

After a day of documentaries, head to the nearby Indianapolis cultural district, Broad Ripple Village for a bit of relaxation. Take advantage of the wide selection of Indianapolis restaurants and Indianapolis bars in Broad Ripple.
