Indianapolis Music Events 4/22 to 4/25: The Flaming Lips, Carnaval, and the Melody Inn’s 75th Anniversary

This weekend in Indianapolis music, the extravagant excess of Brazil’s Carnaval comes to the Circle City, a giant, confetti-laced hamster ball rolls through Bloomington, and a classic Indianapolis music venue celebrates 75 years of business. Yes, there’s plenty of awesome concerts and Indianapolis events happening this weekend in all six Indianapolis cultural districts, so be sure to get out and let Indianapolis show you a good time.

The Jazz Kitchen is celebrating Earth Day in quite an unorthodox way. Sponsored by NUVO Newsweekly, the Indianapolis jazz venue is bringing the spirit of Carnaval to Indy with a massive party to celebrate the release of NUVO‘s Green Guide. It’ll be a crazy dance night, with DJ Kyle Long and Artur Silva spinning tunes all night long. If you haven’t quite learned how to use your hips yet, there’ll be free dance lessons by Sandro Felix and Rosangela Pinheiro at this Indianapolis event, so you have no excuse not to get out on the dance floor.

You know if you head down to Bloomington you’ll always be able to see top notch psychedelic, noise, indie, electronica, and garage bands for relatively cheap. This weekend is no exception. The Indiana University Auditorium will be filled with confetti, people dancing in animal suits, giant UFO’s, and other insane props as Oklahoma freak rockers The Flaming Lips take to the stage on Thursday. The Lips have a reputation for having one of the craziest live shows out there; to celebrate their latest release, Embryonic, the band has been popping out of a massive vagina to start concerts. Yeah.  You need to see this band.

Also, this weekend is a banner weekend for long-time Indianapolis fixture the Melody Inn. The Inn has swapped hands a number of times but has managed to stay afloat and profitable for the past 75 years, quite an accomplishment. What better way to celebrate 75 years of pumping out live Indianapolis music than with a massive concert? The Cocaine Wolves from Lafayette, Indianapolis band The Leisure Kings, Six Gallery from Columbus, and dance cover band Miss Kimmy and Zorba are just a few of the groups playing at the Melody Inn anniversary party on Friday, plus a performance by comedian Dave Dugan. And there’s free food. Win-win.
