Dance Kaleidoscope Presents Final Piece “Pictures at an Exhibition”

Dance Kaleidoscope ends their 2009-2010 Indianapolis performing arts season this weekend with Pictures at an Exhibition, an original dance piece. This colorful Indianapolis dance company offers visually stimulating contemporary works of ballet and modern dance. Dance Kaleidoscope dancers will take the stage this weekend at the Indiana Repertory Theatre in Indianapolis downtown, May 20 to 23, 2010. This Indianapolis theatre offering promises to be a stunning spectacle in which dance, music and art collide for an incredible live performance. Tickets to this Indianapolis art event range from $6.00 to $37.00.

Pictures at an Exhibition is a world premiere of new choreography by David Hochoy. With a focus on interesting images and beautiful movement, Hochoy intends to uplift, inspire and dazzle his audiences. The performance actually includes two parts. The first, “Writing on the Great Wall,” is a thorough reworking of a piece presented by Hochoy in 2006. With two new sections, returning Dance Kaleidoscope fans will be astounded at the ever changing process of choreography.

“Writing on the Great Wall” was inspired by the art of Chinese calligraphy and the flowing strokes used to created intricate characters in the Chinese written language. Taking a cue from his mentor Chungliang Al Huang, a world renowned Tai-Chi master, teacher, dancer, poet and artist, Hochoy’s work reflects the wisdom and sensitivity imparted to him by his teacher and friend. Chungliang’s own calligraphy is featured as a projection on the back scrim, as dancers create visually stirring images using their bodies and long, black silk banners. Hochoy completes the journey with two entirely new sections, bring the piece to a wonderful culmination.

The second title piece, Pictures at an Exhibition, features the dramatic Russian music of Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky. French composer Maurice Ravel offers a stunning orchestral arrangement of Mussorgsky’s original piano score. Mussorgsky’s music was inspired by an exhibition of one of his recently deceased friend’s work. Various sketches and paintings from his artist friend, Victor Hartmann, are illuminated throughout Mussorgsky’s soulful composition. To this Ravel adds a new sense of color and fantasy through inventive and powerful orchestrations in the classical cannon.

Choreographer David Hochoy combines with the piece images that belong to Dance Kaleidoscope company members, but were in some way suggested through the music. The piece has a malleable quality as it drifts through many moods. Touching on sensual, whimsical, romantic and even absurd, Pictures from an Exhibition offers a stunning and imaginative walk through an Indianapolis art gallery of movement and bodies. The performing Indianapolis artists maintain a sensitivity throughout that reflects the power of their combined artistry.
