School might be out for Summer, but class is definitely in session for the students at East High School. Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez experience a true love connection during a winter break retreat with their families to a ski lodge, cementing their affection over New Year’s Eve karaoke. After they part ways, it seems they may never see each other again. That is until Troy, who is captain of the basketball team, runs into Gabriella in homeroom. The ever brainy Gabrielle has already fallen in with the Brainiacs. The play opens as Troy shares this information with his Jock friends.

Soon after we meet Sharpay and Ryan Evans, the leaders of the Thespians and stars of the school play. As the cast settles into homeroom, their teacher Mrs. Darbus tells them about upcoming auditions for the Winter musical “Juliet and Romeo,” a new version of Shakespeare’s classic romance written by East High School student Kelsi Nielsen. Ryan, Sharpay, Troy and Gabriella are thrown together in detention by Darbus, after using their cell phones in class. Tensions become apparent as Sharpey intends to push Gabreilla out of Troy’s affections. After auditions, Troy and Gabriella seem to have captured the heart of the playwright, landing call backs for the play and infuriating Sharpay.

High School Musical explores the nature of clicks in high school. Jocks, Thespians, Brainiacs, Skater Dudes and more create a tense hierarchy that commands students to “Stick to the Status Quo.” When Troy and Gabriella successfully break through into the world of the Thespians while juggling their friendships with many kinds of students, it seems that precedent has been broken, giving students the freedom to be themselves and not who their friends dictate they should be.

High School Musical premiered on the Disney Channel as a made for television film in 2006. Upon its release that January, it became their most successful Disney Channel Original Movie ever, with both a television sequel High School Musical 2 and a feature length film High School Musical 3: Senior Year. It is the only Disney Channel movie ever to be given a theatrical adaptation, and plans are already in the works for High School Musical 4: East Meets West. In a modern day adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, Troy and Gabriella attempt to transcend the cliques that keep them apart, dividing the school and ultimately teaching everyone a valuable lesson.
