“Formless Forms” by Chitra Ramanthan

Chitra Ramanathan’s work fills walls of Gallery Seven at Pike Performing Arts Center. This Indianapolis art show is FREE to all Indianapolis people and runs now through July 13. Ramanthan’s predominately large scale body of mixed media paintings are characterized by intense color and multiple layers of textures that interact with light to “challenge the boundaries of their two dimensional surfaces.” Her work is inspired by short lived garden blooms and cyclical seasons both of which the artist compares with the continually evolving ephemeral, fleeting happiness of their “formless form.”

Ramanathan coined this phrase to describe her concept. Hints of circles signify the human life cycle, trying times followed by happy phases. Her work is deeply influenced  by her roots in India and the commonly held belief in the life and rebirth cycle. Her use of varied surfaces for her paintings create what was described as “tactile works that resonate with quite harmony” by Manhattan Arts International magazine.

Ramanathan recently returned to the Circle City after completing a residency with Camac Centre D’Art – Marney Art Centre in France. The seasonal gardens their have long inspired Ramanathan. Don’t miss your chance to see this artists work for FREE in Pike Performing Arts Center’s Indianapolis art gallery: Gallery Seven.
