MGMT, Tame Impala to Play Vogue Tonight; Holy F***, Beta Male to Play Afterparty

If you missed the wealth of Indianapolis music events going on this weekend, you’ve got the chance to make it up tonight with a two part Indianapolis music shebang. Psych pop band MGMT will be playing with Tame Impala at The Vogue at 8:00 p.m., and the afterparty will blow the roof off of Rock Lobster at 11:30 with an encore performance by Holy F*** (name too bad ass to print here) and Beta Male. Tight pantsed hipsters, smoke addled hippies, booty shakin’ club denizens, and Indianapolis nightlife regulars should get on out to downtown Indianapolis to catch these two sweet concerts, one of the best (and only) things to do in Indianapolis tonight.

MGMT is something of a prodigy. The band (based out of Brooklyn) shot to stardom after the release of their 2008 album, Oracular Spectacular, which quickly garnered tons of honors from music media around the United States. It was named the 18th Best Album of the Decade by Rolling Stone, best album of 2008 by NME, and crashed through at Number 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. MGMT was nominated for a Grammy in 2010, and their second record, Congratulations, was released on April 13 of 2010. Congratulations took the band in a somewhat more psychedelic direction, abandoning the earlier bass-heavy pop grooves for a more layered, sprawling sound. Both styles should be present at The Vogue tonight, so fans at this Indianapolis music venue are in for a treat.

MGMT’s backing band is no less accomplished. Tame Impala released their jaw dropping debut record, Innerspeaker, in May to lots of critical acclaim. The record is a psychedelic masterpiece, drawing on lots of different influences and creating a unique, hazy set of tunes. Frenetic drumming, rhythms that can only be described as groovy, haunting melodies, and lots of fuzz, delay, and reverb make a listen of Innerspeaker feel downright otherworldly, like an interstellar spaceship with a message of love and funk. Tame Impala should be an interesting compliment to the more accessible MGMT; fans of Congratulations should easily be able to soak up the sounds of Innerspeaker.

While the concert at The Vogue will probably be a lot of fun, there’s one catch: it’s already sold out. If you haven’t already bought your tickets, you’ll be left out on the cold at the Vogue, but you can still go to the riotous afterparty at the Rock Lobster, where the drinks are cheap and Indianapolis comes to have a good time. The Indianapolis bar will definitely be pumping tonight; the afterparty for MGMT is cool enough to be a significant Indianapolis event in and of itself.

Featured at the Rock Lobster tonight will be Holy F*** and Beta Male. Holy F*** is an electronic dance group with groovy bass lines, dynamic beats, and mostly organic instrumentation. Their latest album, Latin, was released just a few weeks ago and is a small gem of an album. With a strong rhythm section that keeps your head nodding while allowing for some severe noodling by the fuzzy guitars, oddly syncopated horns, and electronic bleepy-bloops, Holy F*** is the perfect band to get any late night party started.

Beta Male is Indianapolis’ own trippy dance wave band, a hometown favorite that’s kind of taken the Indianapolis music scene by storm. They’ve played all over the Circle City and garnered accolades from most reputable Indianapolis media outlets, including NUVO Newsweekly,, Metromix, and more; if you’re at all a fan of experimental Indianapolis music, you’ve probably at least heard of Beta Male, if not seen them at Birdy’s Bar & Grill, the IndyPride Festival, the Broad Ripple Music Festival, and more. If you don’t know who Beta Male is, you’ll definitely remember them after seeing them live; they were voted “Sexiest Band in Indianapolis” for a reason. It’d be a huge surprise if Rock Lobster isn’t packed tonight for both of these cool bands. And if you were lucky enough to snag a ticket to the MGMT/Tame Impala concert, you can get a ticket to the Holy F***/Beta Male concert at a severe discount.

If you find yourself jonesin’ for a musical fix this evening, call a friend and see if they have an extra ticket to the sold out MGMT/Tame Impala show, one of the most in demand concerts Indy has seen in a while. If you can’t get a ticket at the last minute, don’t worry; the afterparty with Holy F*** and hometown favorite Beta Male promises to be quite the doozy as well. Head on down to the Broad Ripple Village tonight to get a little trippy with a few of the best psychedelic bands in the business.
