Free Family Summer Fun at Indianapolis Parks: July 1 to 3

Indy Parks and Recreation offers Indianapolis people FREE Summer fun all season long with concerts and film in parks across the Circle City. This weekend Garfield and Northwestway Parks host outdoor concerts and an outdoor movie, making experiences the whole family can enjoy. Garfield Park offers two free outdoor concerts as part of their Pops at the MacAllister Center Series and their Family Fun Night Concert Series, while Northwestway Park features A Night at the Museum for Indianapolis kids. Garfield Park: Pops at the MacAllister Center, July 1

Garfield Park invites the Indianapolis community to enjoy the first concert of their Pops at the MacAllister Series Thursday, July 1. This Indianapolis music event features the Greater Greenwood Community Band, the official orchestra of Greenwood, Indiana. This all volunteer band utilizes the skills and talents of musicians from the Greenwood community. Not only does this Indianapolis music organization provide FREE entertainment for Hoosier across Indianapolis, the Greater Greenwood Community Band provides a solid opportunity for individual musical expression, enjoyment and growth among its members.

Founded in 1993, this Indianapolis band rehearses weekly, tackling a repertoire that is both challenging and enjoyed by these Indianapolis artists. This Thursday, July 1, the Greater Greenwood Community Band fills Garfield Parks MacAllister Center for Performing Arts with the sweet sounds of  a Pops Orchestra. Playing a range of music from show tunes to classical composition and even some modern music, the Greater Greenwood Community Band offers a fun night of classical music.

Garfield Park Pool: Family Fun Night Concert Series

The Family Fun Night Concert Series at the Garfield Park Pool continues Friday, July 2 at 6:00 pm. Pack the kids, swimsuits, towels, a picnic and sunscreen as you head to this Indianapolis park for a concert by the pool featuring Indianapolis band The Tides. This quirky cover band does it all including hit songs like Jimmy Buffet’s “Brown Eyed Girl” to Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.” Self described as “Indy’s newest wacky, crazy, variety Caribbean party band,” The Tides offer upbeat music that acts as a perfect soundtrack to Summer.

Tom Berich, Seth Jenkins, Casey Harshbarger, Dane Dye, Kenny Kip and Michael Beck are The Tides. Together these talented musicians are all about fun. With a range of instrumental talents, these cool cats bring a fresh sound to dozens of classic rock and pop songs. Using vocals, steel drum, percussion, keyboard, accordion, ukelele, guitar, bass, saxophone, ewi and more, these musicians rock hard to their and your favorite songs. With new songs in their repertoire like “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz and a few other surprises, their pumped for a whole season of Summer fun and music.

Don’t miss Indianapolis performing arts event at the Garfield Park Pool Friday, July 2 starting at 6:00 pm. Regular admission to the pool does apply, which is only $3.00 for Indianapolis kids and seniors and $4.00 for adults. Northwestway Park: A Night at the Musuem – Battle of the Smithsonian

Northwestway Park takes its turn as the host of the Movies in the Park series sponsored by Indy Parks and Recreation. This Indianapolis event is FREE and open to all Indianapolis people. A sequel to The Night at the Museum, The Night at the Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian has an all star cast including Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Hank Azaria, Robin Williams, Brad Garret, Owen Wilson, Christopher Guest, Ricky Gervais and Bill Hader. Released in 2009, this action comedy takes viewers on a creative journey through the Smithsonian Institution.

Set two years after Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) saved the magic tablet and the day in the first film, Daley finds himself head of Daley Devices, a company he founded to manufacture his inventions. The American Museum of Natural History is due to shut down for renovations, causing Larry to spend one last evening with his friends Theodore Roosevelt and the Easter Island Head. When the tablet that brings the exhibits to life is stolen once more by the conniving Dexter the Capuchin Monkey, Larry is pulled back into the magical world battling the evil Pharaoh Kahmunrah (Hank Azaria).

Larry must stop the evil forces from turning the Tablet is a weapon of mass destruction. As he faces the most important challenge of his life, he meets plenty of friends along the way like Amelia Earhart, George Armstrong Custer, Napoleon Bonaparte, Al Capone and Ivan the Terrible. Can Larry pull through once more to save the tablet and the day again? Or will his museum friends be doomed to live an oppressed life at the hands of evil Pharaoh Kahmunrah? Find out at Northwestway Park Saturday, July 3. The film begins at dusk.
