This weekend in Indianapolis music, big costumes and big buzz come to Conseco Fieldhouse, blogger darlings challenge the Indianapolis real estate (yuk yuk) market at The Bishop, and peace, love, and jam bands slouch their way to Noblesville to noodle all night. Tons of great shows are happening in Indianapolis this weekend, so it’s just a matter of choosing your poison when you hit the six Indianapolis cultural districts this evening.
Probably the biggest concert this weekend is Lady GaGa‘s appearance at Conseco Fieldhouse. Since the release of her two mega-smash albums, The Fame and The Fame Monster, Lady GaGa has captured the hearts and minds of the United States‘ radio listening public and has been catapulted to the world stage. Some claim she’s the next Madonna, some claim she’s just a hype machine, but regardless of what your opinion may be, Lady GaGa will most definitely sell out Conseco Fieldhouse. You don’t become the second most powerful musician in the world (according to Forbes just last month) by accident, and GaGa sure knows how to work her fans and her image. Following an appearance at Purdue University earlier this year, Lady GaGa’s concert at Conseco Fieldhouse might be the last time she comes to Indiana for a long time.
Down in Bloomington, where indie and chillwave are king, The Bishop is being treated with sneak previews of two bands that are on their way up to the Pitchfork Music Festival taking place in Chicago this weekend: Real Estate and Kurt Vile. Real Estate was one of the first bands to do the whole psychedelic dream pop surf rock garage schtick that’s become so popular in recent months, and they’re still the band that does it the best. Their eponymous debut album was released in 2009 and garnered a lot of critical acclaim from Indianapolis media and bloggers alike. And then there’s Kurt Vile, a rising star in the indie singer/songwriter circuit. He plays mostly with his band, The War on Drugs, but in the past couple years he’s made a name for himself with his three solo albums, Childish Prodigy, God is Saying This to You, and Constant Hitmaker. Real Estate and Kurt Vile should be a good combination, especially if you won’t be able to make their Pitchfork appearances.
Speaking of Pitchfork, if you’re looking for a place to party all night with fellow music lovers that’s a little closer to home, head on up to Noblesville for MojoStock 2010. The second incarnation of the annual jam band festival takes place over 24 hours, starting on Saturday. This Indianapolis festival will be happening at the Sleepybear Campgrounds, a large camping site just across the highway from the Verizon Wireless Music Center. The 2009 version of MojoStock included such chill Indianapolis bands as Rich Hardesty, Sour Mash, The Great Hookup, and more, and the 2010 iteration promises even more great artists, including Twin Cats, Adam Jay, Hyryder, Psynapse, and Pocket Fullah Nasty. And the best thing about MojoStock? 20% of the proceeds go to the bands themselves, and the rest goes to fight cancer. Nothing like an Indianapolis event with a good cause, huh?
These three events aren’t the only things going on musically in Naptown this weekend. Brooks & Dunn, Cathy Morris, Steve Allee, Umphrey’s McGee, Nappy Roots, and more are all playing at Indianapolis bars and Indianapolis music venues this weekend, so check out our show calendar below and get out on the town!
