Terre Haute by Indiana State University’s Crossroads Repertory Theatre at the IRT

Gore Vidal meets Timothy McVeigh in Edmund White’s Terre Haute at the IRT this weekend, as performed by Indiana State University’s Crossroads Repertory Theatre. This unique Indianapolis theatre production comes straight from Crossroad Repertory’s Theatre’s 2010 season in Terre Haute, Indiana. The gutsy show imagines a series of conversations between two figures that bear remarkable likeness to the famous author and the infamous bomber. Tickets to this Indianapolis performing arts event are $20.00. It runs Thursday July 29 through Saturday, July 31 on Indiana Repertory Theatre’s Upper Stage in Indianapolis downtown.

Edmund White’s play premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2007 and later received productions in London and New York. Now the show comes to the Hoosier state as performed by members from the community which bears its same name: Terre Haute. The script is inspired by essays Gore Vidal wrote about Timothy McVeigh and his motivations. After reading one of Vidal’s essays, McVeigh invited the author to witness his execution. Vidal, who was living in Italy and unable to attend remarked, “The attorney general had given me too short a time to get from here to there.” Though the two men never actually met, this two person play imagines a series of interactions between them.

Though the names are different, each character has an uncanny likeness of their inspired figures down to an exact body count of the two prisoners (McVeigh and his fictional counterpart Harrison): 168. The show centers on a series of prison interviews of the death row inmate. The pair struggle to find common political ground as one adheres to the sacredness of human life and the other to individual freedom.

Set in the United States federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana on the eve of the execution, the riveting script reflects on the bombing that killed so many Americans. In addition, it delves into the events that led to the heinous act as well as the ethical conflict and yet surprising attraction between the two men from very different backgrounds. The duo find common ground over their belief in freedoms enshrined int he Constitution that are being trampled by the American government, yet the Vidal character struggles with the obvious conflict in their agreement. In addition, he cannot help put pump the McVeigh character for the details of his crime, consumed with curiosity over both their differences and similarities.
