Harmonie State Park in New Harmony, Indiana

On the banks of the Wabash River in New Harmony, Indiana is a quiet and serene atmosphere full of natural adventures. Harmonie State Park is located in the southern Hoosier State, 25 miles north of Evansville, Indiana. Hiking, biking and horseback riding are popular things to do on a day trip from Indianapolis. Swimming, boating and fishing are some of the fun water activities offered here, and it’s all within a 3.5 hour drive of the Circle City.

Harmonie State Park offers several different camping packages, in case your day trip turns into an entire weekend getaway. There are 200 electric sites for rent, a youth tent area and several cabins. Amenities include flush toilets and hot showers. Large groups may even book cabins close to one another, perfect for family reunions, overnight field trips and office retreats. Campers describe the grounds as a clean and quiet place for outdoor enjoyment.

Indianapolis kids can come learn about the plant and animal life in southern Indiana, and the Harmonie State Park nature center offers educational services for all ages. A festive seasonal event at the nature center brings in interpretive naturalists to give tours and educate park goers about the area’s natural resources. Picnic areas and covered shelters are sprinkled throughout the park, and they may be rented in advance for large events or parties. Playgrounds are also a hot spot for the kids.

A boat launch area is available for those who wish to spend an afternoon on the Wabash River. Catfish and Bass are the most common fish reeled in on Indiana’s largest river. Splashing around in the pool is another way to cool off in the summer months at Harmonie State Park. A small admission fee is charged to get into the pool area, where guests can enjoy a water slide and all day fun in the sun. New Harmony is a unique place in the Crossroads of America, and the community works to preserve it’s heritage and important contributions to Indiana history. In 1814, and Utopian community attempted to settle in New Harmony, but only stayed for a decade. Later, another attempt at communal living was made when the Owenites took over the area in 1825.
