2010 Experience Hendrix Tour: Generations of Voodoo Children Pay Tribute

If you think guitar legend Jimi Hendrix died with the 60’s, you’d be wrong. Though the boundary breaking musician passed away of an accidental sleeping pill over dose in 1970, his music and legacy lives on in the headphones, car stereos, record collections, and sheet music of millions of music fans worldwide. Hendrix is also remembered by the countless electric blues guitarists after him who appropriated and evolved his trademark style, a roster which includes almost every subsequent rock guitarist. For those who were too young (or not even born yet) to listen to Jimi when he was still alive, you’ll get the chance to Experience Hendrix in Indianapolis on Saturday, November 20, 2010 when the all-star studded Experience Hendrix tour makes its final stop at the Old National Centre.

Experience Hendrix concerts have been going on since 1995, when the Jimi Hendrix Electric Guitar Festival headlined at the Bumbershoot music festival. The concert was supposed to be a one off performance, but the show was so popular that Experience Hendrix L.L.C. (the company founded by Jimi’s father to protect and enrich his son’s legacy) decided to bring the show to other parts of the United States. 2008 marked the first time Experience Hendrix toured the entire country; the 2010 Fall Experience Hendrix Tour is the first time Indianapolis people get to hear Hendrix’s legacy performed live.

Far from a simple tribute concert by unknown musicians, the Experience Hendrix Tour features guitarists who either played with or were heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix. The Indianapolis event at the Old National Centre is no exception: on stage will be Billy Cox, Steve Vai, Jonny Lang, Susan Tedeschi, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robert Randolph, Brad Whitford, Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo, Living Colour, Chris Layton, The Slide Brothers, Ernie Isley, and Mato Nanji. A few big name Indianapolis musicians are also expected to sit in on a few songs, so expect some surprises at this Indianapolis music event.

You may be unfamiliar with some of the names on the Experience Hendrix roster, but all are more than qualified to channel the guitar spirit of Hendrix. Billy Cox is probably the musician who has been with Hendrix the most; he served in the Army with Hendrix and performed with the legendary guitarist in a few early bands. He didn’t join the famed Jimi Hendrix Experience until after Hendrix’s death, but he did play in the Band of Gypsys, Jimi’s 1970 blues jam band. Steve Vai is a household blues guitar name, a three time Grammy winner with plenty of credits under his belt.

The other performers at Experience Hendrix are no less qualified. They include Jonny Lang (Turn Around, Long Time Coming), Susan Tedeschi (Grammy nominated guitarist for The Other Ones and the Derek Trucks Band), Kenny Wayne Shepherd (#3 ranked blues artist by Guitar World in 1997), Robert Randolph (pedal steel guitarist for Robert Randolph and the Family Band), Brad Whitford (rhythm guitarist for Aerosmith), Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo (of the Grammy award winning Chicano rock band Los Lobos), Chris Layton (the drummer for Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble), and Ernie Isley, who grew up with Hendrix and played in a few of his early bands.

Whether you remember when Are You Experienced? came out or you just know Hendrix as that guy who set his guitar on fire, Experience Hendrix could make you believe in guitar gods. This tribute to America’s most well known and influential guitarist is an effective channeling of a music pioneer whose life was snuffed out before its time. Experience Hendrix takes place on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 7:30 p.m at the Old National Centre (formerly the Murat Centre) in downtown Indianapolis. Tickets range from $48.20 to $81.75, depending on where you sit and how early you buy. The Circle City is the final stop for the 2010 Experience Hendrix tour, so this is your last chance to catch all these masterful guitarists on one stage (at least for this year). Come hear the music that continues to influence hundreds of Indianapolis bands and bands around the world at the last leg of the Experience Hendrix Tour.
