INDYPROV Frees Comedy from Scripted Shackles at White Rabbit Cabaret

Comedy should be quick on its feet, fluid, resourceful, and always ready for something new. You can’t always get the necessary spark in a strictly defined comedy medium like a sitcom or a movie, and even partially scripted performances like stand up can be tainted by stilted jokes and forced timing. Improv comedy, on the other hand, has no such problems, if only because it has no boundaries. It’s hard to be restrained by your material when you have no material. It’s in this spirit of free wheeling, fly by the seat of your pants comedy that White Rabbit Cabaret, the newest Indianapolis nightlife venue, presents the award winning INDYPROV comedy troupe on Saturday, February 12, 2011 in the Fountain Square cultural district.

INDYPROV is an Emmy nominated comedy troupe that’s been operating in the Circle City since 2003. The group began when Indianapolis resident David Bruoehler, the co-founder of the National Improv Theater in New York City, hosted a comedy workshop series at Crackers Comedy Club, a common proving ground for Indianapolis comedians. INDYPROV was born from several of those original workshop participants, and their first set of performances was held at El Sol de Tala, an Indianapolis restaurant. It wasn’t long before the troupe was set up with a comedy show at the Funny Bone Comedy Club and INDYPROV came into its own. Since their 2003 debut, INDYPROV has performed at Indiana University – Purdue University (IUPUI), shows during the IndyFringe Festival, NUVO Newsweekly events, and all over the United States. Currently they perform every third Friday at Talbott Street Nightclub. The Indianapolis performing arts troupe has even been nominated for a local Emmy, thanks to a segment they filmed for Channel 20 WFYI about the swingin’ singles town of West Lafayette, Indiana.

Likely you’ve been to at least one or two amateur improv shows and cringed at some of the games and skits. Improv is no Indianapolis sport for the faint of heart; it takes a crew of professionals with no sense of shame (and no need for it either) to grease the wheels of a successful improv show, and INDYPROV has just such a crack team. INDYPROV members come from all sorts of Indianapolis art traditions. Some are veterans of Indianapolis theaters like the Theatre on the Square, the Actors Theatre of Indiana (in Carmel, Indiana), and the Wheeler Arts Center, others spent time on the Indy comedy circuit, and still others honed their chops at Indiana colleges and universities. If you check out INDYPROV at the White Rabbit Cabaret on February 12, 2011, there’ll be no shortage of trained professionals doing unprofessional things.

INDYPROV comes to White Rabbit Cabaret in Indianapolis on Saturday, February 12, 2011, so be ready for plenty of madcap situations, awkward dialogue, crowd involvement, and off the cuff wit at the Indianapolis bar. And if you miss INDYPROV at the White Rabbit, you can check them out at Second Story next Saturday, Talbott Street Nightclub the Saturday after that, and the Spotlight Players Theatre in Beech Grove on February 25. This Indianapolis event at White Rabbit Cabaret will have two performances, one at 10:00 and another at 11:00, and since it’s improv, both shows will be entirely different. Doors open at 7:00. Tickets are a measly $5 at the door for both shows. If you want to free yourself from the rigid confines of staged comedy, come see Indianapolis’ first and only independent improv comedy troupe at White Rabbit Cabaret on Saturday, February 12, 2011.
