High Tech Adventure at Indy Parks

Indy Parks and Recreation is integrating a new adventure in their Indianapolis parks this Spring and Summer: “geocaching.” This global phenomenon has tech-savvy Indianapolis people combining a love of electronics and fresh air. In an advanced game of hide and seek, Hoosiers can discover treasures that exist in their very own backyards. Anyone with a GPS device can play at anytime. This ongoing Indianapolis event kicks off at noon on April 16 at Krannert Park. Get out and about in Indianapolis downtown and the surrounding Indianapolis communities to discover Indiana’s naturalistic beauty in Indy Parks Geocaching Adventure.

Indy Parks is instituting the adventure to celebrate 100 years of public parks. They will showcase the George Kessler Park and Boulevard System through this celebration. The tribute will focus on the Indy Park’s history and impact on parks planning. They have stashed 100 “caches,” or containers, throughout the entire parks system. Geocaching takes adventures on a journey through the parks system to locate the secret location of these caches.

Here is how it works. Participants will use their Global Positioning Systems (GPSs) or smart phones to search out these caches. Indy Parks provides the locations longitude and latitude coordinates on their website. Park lovers enter the information into their tech device to find the specific park and then to locate the cache through a hike through the park. After April 16, the location of each cache will be located on the Geocaching website. Use the search term “Indy Parks Geocaching Adventure” to get started.

Caches will be stashed in a variety of locations, underground or above, outside building, in the nook of a tree or by a babbling creek. Upon locating the cache, adventures will open a capsule and make their mark on a logbook. Indy Parks hopes that participants will leave the journal in tact for fellow adventurers. You may even find a prize for enjoying the spectacular views in Indy Parks. When you get home again, log back on to Geocaching.com to share tales of your adventure, or come back to FunCityFinder and tell us your stories!

This unique opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in an integrated technological experience is perfect for Hoosiers looking to spice up a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Don’t miss your chance to participate in this unparalleled activity.
